The secret season.
Off Peak Hotels is an independent guide to the world's finest hotels in the months they cost the least. We track their rates every day, so every price here is one we have actually seen.
We are a husband and wife who travel more than is entirely sensible, and for years we did it the way everyone does. We booked the same weeks as everyone else, stood in the same queues, and paid the highest prices of the year. We even took the price as proof. If a month cost the most, surely it was the best time to go.
It took a few summers to work out that this was backwards. The trip that changed it was a week pushed just past the end of August. Same hotel, same sea, same table on the terrace. Fewer people, warmer water, a staff with time to talk, and a rate that made a lot more sense.
That is the whole secret. Fewer crowds, more intimate settings, service that feels one on one, and prices that start to make sense.
How we choose the moment
Every great destination has months its regulars keep quiet about. The Mediterranean holds its summer heat into October. Rome is at its most livable once the tour buses have gone. Kyoto is never quieter than in the snow.
We have spent years learning where those months fall, and we research every one properly: what the weather actually does, what closes, how warm the sea is, when the crowds thin. A month only earns a place here if the experience holds up. Cheap is easy to find. Cheap and better is the whole point, and we will tell you plainly which months to avoid even when they are the least expensive of all.
How we track the rates
Then we prove it with numbers. We track the same room at every hotel on this list, night by night, across the year, until we know what each one charges when demand is at its highest. When a hotel’s rate in one of its beautiful months falls far below that peak, that is a window, and it goes on the site with the dates and the figure attached.
Nothing here is an estimate or a press release. It is what the room actually costs, on the days we say it does.
What we do, and what we don’t
We do not sell rooms. We tell you when they are worth buying.
You book directly with the hotel or its booking partner, at the price we found. Some of those links earn us a commission. It never changes the price you pay, and it has never once decided which hotels appear here or which windows we publish. No hotel is on this list because it paid to be. None can be.
