Sleeping in a castle, honestly
The category covers more than turrets. Le Grand Contrôle sits inside the grounds of Versailles. Reschio is a thousand-year-old castle at the centre of a private Umbrian estate. Ballyfin is a Regency house in the Irish midlands, Cliveden and Chewton Glen are English estates with the scale of small institutions, and Cap Rocat is a nineteenth-century coastal fortress cut into the rock of Mallorca. Ahilya Fort is an eighteenth-century fort-palace above the Narmada ghats.
What they have in common is mass. These are buildings made of stone, with high ceilings and large rooms, designed long before anyone expected central heating. That makes them magnificent in cold weather and, in several cases, impossible in it.
When castle hotels are cheapest
The British and Irish houses are the clearest case on this site of an off-peak month being better than a peak one. From January through March, and again in November and early December, the great houses run their winter season: fires in every room, long walks on frozen ground, longer dinners, and the demesne effectively to yourself. Rates are at their lowest and the house is doing precisely what it was built to do.
The Mediterranean castles do the opposite and simply close. Reschio shuts for a winter break from December through March, with inland Umbria offering no winter-sun consolation, and Cap Rocat closes from November to the end of February along with much of Mallorca’s dining. Ballyfin takes January off for annual maintenance in Ireland’s darkest weeks.
India runs on its own logic. Ahilya Fort is at its best during the monsoon from July to September, when the Narmada is high and the ghats are washed clean, and its cheapest months are the pre-monsoon furnace from April to June when the Nimar plains bake past 40C and only dawn and dusk are usable.

The good ones are not, and modern heating has been quietly retrofitted into most of them, but the character of a stone building in winter does persist. Expect rooms that take time to warm, corridors that never quite do, and fires that are genuinely functional rather than decorative. It is part of the appeal rather than a defect, provided you pack for it.
What is the difference between a castle hotel and a country house hotel?
Age and construction, mostly. A country house hotel is typically a Georgian or Victorian house, or a farm or estate, built for comfortable habitation. A castle or fort was built for defence or display, which means thicker walls, grander proportions and more awkward practicalities. Many of these places are both, and Heckfield Place appears under both headings for exactly that reason.
Do castle hotels close for the winter?
The Mediterranean ones generally do. Reschio in Umbria closes from December into spring and Cap Rocat on Mallorca from November to the end of February. The British and Irish houses stay open through winter, which is their best season, though Ballyfin closes for maintenance in January.
Is Christmas a good time to book one?
It is the one winter period that is not off-peak. Houses of this kind run elaborate festive programmes and price accordingly, so late December carries some of the highest rates of the year. January and February deliver the same fires and the same empty grounds at a fraction of the cost.
