What the desert asks of you
The desert hotels we track are not variations on one idea. Amanjena and La Mamounia sit at the edge of Marrakech, Dar Ahlam is a kasbah in the Skoura palm groves, Al Moudira is on the Luxor west bank, Longitude 131 looks straight at Uluru, and Jack’s Camp and Tswalu are deep in the Kalahari and the Makgadikgadi. What they share is that the landscape is the entire point and the landscape is only accessible at certain temperatures.
That gives the category an unusually blunt relationship with price. There is no weather nuance to negotiate, no question of whether a cloudy week still works. Either you can spend the day outside or you cannot, and the rates reflect it almost perfectly.
When desert hotels are cheapest
In Morocco and Egypt, the cheapest months are July and August, and this is the clearest case on the site of a discount we mostly advise against taking. Marrakech routinely passes 40C in midsummer, which reduces the medina to dawn outings and afternoons beside a pool, and high summer turns Luxor into a furnace where the tombs become ovens. The best months there, October through April, are also the busiest, and the value lies at the edges of that range rather than outside it.
The southern African deserts run the opposite way and reward the contrarian properly. The Kalahari from January to March is its green season: meerkat pups, desert blooms and the reserve at its quietest, at rates well below the dry-season peak. This is a genuine off-peak window rather than a compromise.
Two local quirks are worth knowing. Baja’s desert coast has warm water and a quiet stretch in late summer and October, with September the month to avoid outright for hurricane risk. And Palm Springs has an entirely artificial spike: Coachella and Stagecoach weekends send rates across the whole valley to their yearly peak, regardless of weather.

In Marrakech, Luxor and central Australia, yes, for most people. Highs past 40C are normal and the useful part of the day shrinks to an hour after dawn and an hour before dusk. The hotels remain lovely and the pools remain cold, so if you intend to go nowhere it can work. If you want to see anything, it does not.
Why is the Kalahari cheapest when it is green?
Because safari pricing follows the traditional dry-season view of game watching, when sparse vegetation and scarce water make animals easy to find. Green season brings rain, thicker cover and newborn animals, which is harder for spotting but spectacular in its own right, and far quieter. In the Kalahari specifically it also brings the meerkats and the desert in flower.
What does Coachella do to Palm Springs rates?
It takes the entire valley to its annual peak for two weekends in mid-April, including hotels with no connection to the festival. If you are visiting Palm Springs for the architecture and the pools rather than the music, those are the two weekends of the year to plan around.
Are desert nights cold?
Often sharply so, and this surprises people. Clear dry air loses heat fast after sunset, so a day above 30C can be followed by a night in single figures, particularly in the Kalahari, at Uluru and in the Moroccan south during winter. Pack for both ends of the day.
