Tropical hotels are priced against rain. The green season is cheaper for a reason, but the reason is usually a heavy afternoon rather than a ruined week, and that distinction is worth real money.

Green season, in plain terms
In the tropics the year splits into dry and wet, and the price follows it exactly. The useful thing to understand is that wet season is not one thing. In Ubud and the Costa Rican rainforest, rain typically arrives as a defined afternoon downpour that clears, leaving mornings usable and the landscape spectacular. In Langkawi during the southwest monsoon, it arrives as prolonged days of it, with rough seas that stop boat trips.
The first kind is an off-peak window worth taking. The second is a month to avoid. Both show up as a low rate on a booking site, and nothing on that page tells you which one you are buying.
The secondary effect matters too: the jungle is at its most alive in the rains. Rivers run full, frogs and birds are loud, waterfalls are actually flowing, and the greens are extraordinary. Pacuare Lodge and Capella Ubud are both better propositions in a wet month than a dry one, for anyone who came for the forest rather than the pool.
When tropical hotels are cheapest
Bali’s quiet stretch runs from mid-January to the end of March, when the rains bring the valley alive and the crowds thin sharply. Costa Rica’s green season is long, from May to mid-November, and the lodges price gently through all of it while the rainforest is at its most active.
On Mexico’s Pacific coast, the window is narrower and sits at the end of the wet season, from October into mid-November, with warm Pacific swells and the resorts at their quietest. September is the exception and a firm one: it is the wettest, most humid month at the peak of hurricane season on an exposed coast.
Langkawi inverts the pattern. Its value sits at the tail of the dry season in March and April, with calm seas and thinning crowds, while September and October are the wettest months of the southwest monsoon and the ones we would steer you away from.

In most of the places we track, no. The typical pattern in Ubud and inland Costa Rica is a clear morning, cloud building through the middle of the day and heavy rain in the afternoon or overnight, then clearing. You plan activities for the morning and read in the afternoon. True all-day rain is a monsoon pattern, and it belongs to specific coasts in specific months.
What is the difference between green season and monsoon?
Green season describes a wetter half of the year with daily convective rain, which is workable and often beautiful. A monsoon is a sustained seasonal weather system that can deliver days of continuous rain and rough seas, shutting down boats and beaches. Same low rates, very different holiday, which is why we publish windows into one and not the other.
Is hurricane season a real risk on the Pacific coast?
September is the genuine risk month on Mexico’s Pacific coast, at the statistical peak of the season, combined with the highest humidity of the year. October onwards the risk falls away quickly while rates stay low, which is why the window we publish starts then rather than earlier.
Will things be closed in the wet months?
Less than on a Mediterranean coast, but some things are. Boat excursions and dive trips are the first to go when seas are rough, and a few beach restaurants close in the wettest stretch. The hotels themselves stay open, and inland forest lodges operate normally throughout.
