Mallorca in May

The island at full strength, before anyone arrives to see it.

May is Mallorca at its finest: long 74°F days, the Tramuntana green and flowering, every beach club and terrace open and uncrowded, and the island’s great hotels pricing the last weeks before summer at rates the season itself will never see again.

Crowds and rates both arrive with June

Every Mediterranean island has one month where everything is open and no one has arrived yet. For Mallorca that month is May. The hotels, beach clubs and mountain restaurants that shuttered for winter are all running again, the Tramuntana is at its greenest, and the roads that will crawl in August are empty enough to make the driving itself the point.

01

What May is actually like

Days are long and warm, around 74°F, which is hiking and cycling weather in the mountains and lunch-on-the-terrace weather on the coast. The island’s spring is genuinely beautiful: wildflowers through the olive terraces, the almond groves in leaf, Palma’s cafe squares at their most livable.

The one honest asterisk is the sea. It is brisk in May, around 66°F, swimmable for the committed but not yet the bath of high summer. This is why the month belongs to the hotels with serious pools, and why the beach clubs feel pleasantly private.

02

What to know before you book

The calendar’s cliff edge is June: crowds, road traffic and rates all step up together as the beach season proper begins, and by July the island runs at high occupancy. Book May and you get the same open island with room to breathe.

At the other end of the year, note that much of Mallorca genuinely closes from November to Easter, Cap Rocat among the hotels that shut entirely for winter. May sits at the opposite pole: the whole island switched on, and still priced like a secret.

The honest answers

what we’d tell a friend

When is the best time to visit Mallorca?

June through September is the beach season: the warmest sea, the fullest calendar and the highest prices, with September the connoisseur’s pick as crowds thin while the sea stays warm. May, the month this guide argues for, is arguably the island at its finest: everything open, 74°F days, wildflowers in the Tramuntana and pre-season rates. From November to Easter much of the island’s hotel and restaurant infrastructure closes for winter, Cap Rocat included.

Is May a good time to visit Mallorca?

Yes, for many travelers the best month of the year. Days run around 74°F with long evenings, every restaurant and beach club is open, the mountains are green for hiking and cycling, and hotel rates sit well below the June to September peak. The one trade is the sea, still brisk at around 66°F, which is where a heated pool earns its keep.

What is the weather like in Mallorca in May?

Settled early-summer weather: highs around 74°F, sunny most days, with long evenings warm enough for dinner outside. Rain is occasional and brief. The sea lags the air by a season at around 66°F, warming toward true swimming temperature by mid June. Pack for warm days, one layer for late evenings.
