What October is actually like
The Mediterranean holds its summer heat well into autumn, so the swimming stays honest into late October while the queues for the funicular vanish. The famous walks, to the Arco Naturale, down to Marina Piccola, along Via Tragara, become what they were designed to be: strolls, not processions.
Evenings belong to the island again. The Piazzetta after dark in October is islanders, overnight guests and no one else, and the restaurants that spent August turning tables recover their manners and their pace.
What to know before you book

June is early summer at its best, and mid July through August is the one stretch to avoid: Ferragosto brings peak Italian holiday crowds, wall-to-wall day trippers and the year’s highest prices.
