Santorini in October
Caldera light, warm sea, and Oia’s lanes finally quiet.
October is Santorini’s exhale — the Aegean is still warm from summer, the cruise crowds taper after mid-month, and the caldera hotels price their suites like they want you there.
Santorini’s problem has never been the island; it’s the schedule. In August the caldera path through Oia moves at shuffle speed. In October the same path is a walk — same light, same white-and-blue geometry, a fraction of the people.
What October is actually like
The sea is the quiet headline: the Aegean holds its summer heat deep into autumn, so swimming off a caldera ladder in early October is warmer than in June. Days run to about 74°F with the meltemi winds of high summer mostly gone.
Cruise traffic — the single biggest variable in how the island feels — tapers noticeably after the middle of the month. Sunset in Oia stops being a stadium event and goes back to being a sunset.
What to know before you book
The first three weeks are the sweet spot. By late October a minority of restaurants and boat operators begin their winter close, and the odd rain front comes through — brief, and the caldera looks extraordinary under weather. The cliff hotels stay open and their October pricing is the honest kind.

what we’d tell a friendIs October a good time to visit Santorini?
Yes — early-to-mid October is one of the island’s best windows. The Aegean is still warm (~73°F), days reach about 74°F, the high-summer winds have eased, and cruise crowds taper after mid-month. Luxury hotel rates fall meaningfully below their July–August peak while nearly everything remains open.
Is the sea warm enough to swim in Santorini in October?
Yes. The Aegean stores summer heat well into autumn — early October water is around 73°F (23°C), warmer than in June. Swimming is comfortable through most of the month.
Is Santorini crowded in October?
Far less than in summer. Cruise-ship calls — the main driver of daytime crowds in Oia and Fira — decline through the month, especially after mid-October. Sunset viewpoints, the caldera path, and restaurants all feel like a different island than in August.
